Let me introduce myself. My name is David Holland. After a successful and lengthy career in the United States military as an enlisted person, a line officer, a Supply Corps officer, and ultimately as a Chaplain Corps officer, I entered the field of education.

Following my retirement and not having teaching certification, I enrolled in the initial class of the CalState TEACH program and was honored to be among its first class graduates. I have accomplished work on bachelor, masters, and doctoral degree levels. At the present time I teach junior high school students in Southern California's Orange County. I have been teaching for eight years.

Currently, all California multiple subject credential candidates are required to take the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment in order to become elementary level teachers. This is a challenging examination and one needs to call on all the assistance available.

There are several reasons for this site. One of them is to provide timely and quality information available to teachers to assist in classrooms, to encourage continuing education, to help in website building, etc. Another area is that for RICA preparation. A study guide is offered that tries to organize the domains of the RICA into a helpful booklet. It complements textbooks and preparation seminars. It does not replace them. I designed this guide from a number of sources, found it useful in my own preparation, and recommended it to others to use in their own preparation. All of us passed the assessment successfully.
